🔑LESSON 10 OF 11

EVERYDAY ADULTING

The stuff no class covers, all in one place.

Buying a car, insurance, cooking, laundry, small repairs, contracts, emergencies, jury duty, voting and dealing with police. Everyday adulting, learned before the test module.

THE FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

01

Buying a car without getting buried

Compare the loan, not the monthly payment — dealers stretch the term to make anything look affordable. $24,000 at 6% over 60 months costs about $3,800 in interest; the same car at 15% over 72 months costs over $11,000. Get a pre-purchase inspection on anything used.

02

Car insurance in plain terms

Liability covers damage you cause to others and is legally required. Collision covers your car in a crash; comprehensive covers theft, hail and deer. A higher deductible lowers your monthly premium but raises what you pay when something happens.

03

Contracts and fine print

A signature makes it real, even if the salesperson said otherwise. Look for the term length, the cancellation penalty, automatic renewal and what happens if you're late. You can always say 'I need to read this first' — anyone who won't let you is telling you why.

04

House skills that save real money

Know where the water shutoff and the breaker box are before you need them. Sort laundry by color and read the tag. A plunger, a screwdriver set and a $10 drain snake solve most emergencies for less than one service call.

05

Civic life: jury duty, voting, police

Jury summons are mandatory — ignoring one can mean a fine. Register to vote and check your polling place before election day. In a police stop: keep your hands visible, say what you're doing before you do it, you can ask 'am I free to go?', and you may say you don't consent to a search. Argue later, in court, not on the roadside.
