💳LESSON 05 OF 11

MONEY & BANKING

Money is not about being good with numbers. It's about knowing the rules.

Checking accounts, credit scores, budgets, debt, interest, investing, insurance and scams. This lesson gives you the rules of the game before the test module makes you play it.

THE FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

01

Budgeting that survives real life

The 50/30/20 frame: about 50% of take-home to needs, 30% to wants, 20% to saving and debt. It bends — high rent areas break it — but any budget beats none. Pay yourself first: move savings out the day you get paid, not whatever's left at the end.

02

Credit scores in one page

Scores run roughly 300–850. Payment history is the biggest slice — one 30-day-late mark can drop you 60+ points. Second biggest is utilization: keep balances under 30% of your limit. Length of history matters, so your first card is worth keeping open even unused.

03

Interest works for you or against you

Carrying $2,000 on a card at 24% costs about $480 a year for nothing. The same $2,000 invested at 7% becomes about $4,000 in ten years without you touching it. Same math, opposite direction. That's the whole lesson.

04

The emergency fund is the real first goal

Start with $500, then build to three months of expenses. It's not an investment — it's the thing that keeps a $700 car repair from becoming credit card debt you carry for two years.

05

Insurance and scams

Insurance trades a small certain cost for protection from a large uncertain one — health, auto, renters. Scams share a signature: urgency, secrecy, and an unusual payment method (gift cards, wire, crypto). No real agency, bank or employer will ever ask for those.
